  • I'd like to say its the writing. But there are plenty of well-written books that die on the vine of self publishing. Marketing is what drives sales.

  • Going out on a limb here, so don't laugh if I miss the mark, okay? But I think a bestseller is a book that sells more than the other books. I don't KNOW that, mind.
  • Having a really motivated and connected agent is probably the number one element for the bestseller success of a book. Naturally, the book usually has to have some redeeming value, as well. It would be interesting to me to know whether the number of those reading the so-called "bestsellers" of today have increased proportionally to the population increase, or not. I mean, how many of us have the time to read...unfortunately, I sure don't. [Admittedly, I piss away a lot of time here at AB...oh, well...:-)]
  • A good agent that puts it out in the public eye causing them to buy, buy ,buy.
  • if only there were a formula...all the major publishing houses would be using it. of course, it doesn't hurt when someone like Oprah talks it up, her picks go bestseller immediately. certain authors who have an established fanbase, believe it or not authors name on the cover alone is enough to make it a bestseller. look at a stephen king novel, his name is in 4in letters and the title is in 2 inch letters. name sells. for authors who have yet to reach janet evanovich levels, a gripping storyline, an exciting problems that need to be solved, characters who are realistic but quirky and a little sexual tension and viola'! a best seller
  • A good writer is one that can appeal to both sexes while still be able to appeal to one or the other in other stories. The more people that you can kidnapp into the world you create with your words, the better youre chances of becomming a best selling author
  • good marketing. not necessarily good research or quality. I read a bestseller recently and was horrified at the lack of knowledge the author displayed concerning the medieval period they were describing.
  • certainly not content. It's answered in the word, best seller, it sold well and made money.
