  • Several of them. Scrub, Dog of Alaska by Walt Morey was pivotal for me, as it got you really involved with and attached to the main character before revealing that he was a half-breed Indian. You don't know it until he starts facing prejudice and it makes you really hurt on his behalf. It made me vow to never inflict that sort of pain on another if I could help it. Even now I'm cringing at having typed the words that were flung at him. I also really loved the Little House books and their messages of family, loyalty and resourcefulness. They were clearly very pivotal for me, as I still sew most of my family's clothing, garden, can, cook and bake. I've also nearly rebuilt our house around us, mostly with my own two hands. The Secret Garden was another that really stuck with me. It made me realized that attitude and belief can be disabling just like a true physical handicap. It also showed me that changing your attitudes and beliefs can undo the harm done by the incorrect belief. That has really helped me with raising a child who has a physical disability. It has made me very careful not to further disable her by teaching her to be disabled. Another pivotal book was Cheaper by the Dozen, which bore no resemblance to the movie except the number of children. It was written by the children of the couple that founded time and motion study and revolutionized everything from factories to oral surgery. I really incorporated what they learned about efficiency of motion into everything I've done all my life.
