Get good credit by buying things with a credit card and paying off what you owe early on. You keep doing this and it will counterbalance any bad credit that you have and your credit will eventually become good.

wait it out 10 years, then it magically disappears

You can't. Best bet is to not open any more credit accounts, pay off as much as possible, especially those past due, pay monthly payments on time, and get no more inquiries. Depending on what made your credit bad 7 years is about what it takes. If it was fraud contact all 3 credit bureaus and get a good lawyer. It will take awhile none the less. Good luck.

Stuff comes off your credit reports in only a few instances: 1. It falls off because the reporting time has passed Generally, you are looking at 7 years from the date of first delinquency (i.e. the date you missed the first payment that led to the big bad problem), although there are some things that stay on longer (like judgments). 2. The account is disputed by you and the account holder does not answer the dispute When you file a dispute, the creditor has between 30-45 days to answer the dispute, otherwise the account falls off the report. 3. The account holder removes the information for some reason You can try to get them to agree to delete the account in exchange for paying them i.e. pay for deletion: http://creditreportscrub.blogspot.com/2008/07/sample-pfd-letter.html
