Why do most soap makers wear safety goggles? If you're careful with the lye you don't need goggles.

OBVIOUSLY you have no idea how caustic lye is.

Safety precautions aren't much of a precaution after the fact. They're more of an "OH SH*T! I WISH I WERE WEARING MY SAFETY GEAR SO I WOULDN'T BE SCREAMING MY LUNGS OUT NOW!" kind of a thing at that point in time.

Forgetting that you may make the mistake yourself, what about others? What about you are working, 'safely' with the lye, and someone comes and just happens to get their sleeve caught on something and bumps you at a critical time, and it splashes everywhere, would you be okay with losing your sight and facial appearances, just because you knew you were careful?

You're in the crowd that thinks bad things can't happen to them. You can find your group in the hospital.
