I think parents are just more careful these days and rightly so. I am lucky that my 5 year old can stay with her Dad, or any of her Grandparents whenever she likes (or whenever I like!)

Thanks goodness for relatives. Sitters are expensive and unreliable, but seldom both. The cost of babysitting 3 kids often exceeded the cost of an average evening out. Guess I was a cheapdate or a cheapskate!

I am a parent and my girls are only 2 and 6 months, so i am not real willing to leave them with someone else at this stage, particularly considering the 6 month old is still being breast-fed by my wife. When they grow up a bit more, we may well leave the kids with my wife's mother for a few hours occassionally.

As a child, I was frequently left in daycare and with babysitters. I didn't like it, and I don't want to do the same to my kids. I know a lot of parents who never leave their kids in the care of anyone except a family member, it is not odd.

I had no choice but to leave my son in daycare and summer programs so I could work, but I never, ever left him with anyone outside of that. My daughter never even went to daycare. My husband and I worked it so that he took care of her in the day and I took care of her at night. Periodically, my mother-in-law would take care of her so we could have a night out, but she was always with a family member.
