  • Norway, Finland...Northern Germany...I would say it has to do with lack of sun. Why is Seattle the city with highest suicide and literacy rate? Again not enough D vitamin, therefore no outdoor activities, less sun-more depression.
  • I don't know, and there is metal everywhere, but Norway sure seems to be recognized for theirs; it's a discovery I've been making in the past days, Scandinavian metal is damn awesome, and different from a lot of other types of metal. But because Norway in particular seems to be recognized for their metal, it may seem there's more there than other places, but I don't think that's the case, it just sticks out more. It also helps that a lot of artists there sing in English so it's easier for them to be recognized.
  • It comes from the wish for a revival of the old culture, and the demise of Christianity. You see, people in today's Norway were "christianised" using violence and force. There is some resentment towards the Lutheran Church in Norway, because of what happened back then.
  • Incidents involving murders, church arsons, torture, cannibalism and suicides within the Norwegian black metal scene have raised the profile of black metal from Norway. Norwegian bands are often precieved as more authentic than their non-Norwegian counterparts and have therefore enjoyed more success. This success have in turn spurred the forming of new bands into a somewhat thriving music scene.
  • Lots of Black Metal, you mean like wrought iron
  • This is just a stab, but could it be because they (and more other Scandinavian countries) aren't as Christianized as America and other countries?
  • The environment surrounding this music in our country was also extremely tight when it first started in the 90´s. I guess the closeness, pride and ambitions contributed to the growth. And I agree with a couple of the other answers here as well.
