Do you think that the people who lived during the Renaissance would have understood Picasso's art just as they understood and appreciated Michelangelo's approach to art?

I don't think so. Art is the product of a culture. Michelangelo lived in a time when the artist was first being able to sign their art and claim it as their own (even though it was usually for a patron), let alone make art for the sake of art. Picasso and his ideas would have had no place in that world. It would have been like speaking a different language, only visually.
