Why are flowers and chocolates associated with St. Valentine's Day? Also, who was Valentine?

St. Valentine was a catholic thrown in prison for his beliefs. while he was there he would console other inmates with notes of encouragement, peace, and God's love. I'm sure that is not what everyone wants to hear because it is now know as a day of getting laid. but that is the original St. Valentine. Many years ago but I'm not sure of when.
