No. I keep seeing External Hard Drives advertised. Are they really of any use? In what way are they useful?

For my computer No For my brain YES !!

Yes. In fact, I have several. I've one that I use strictly for backup to my laptop, should my laptop turn belly up. I have several others used for multimedia storage, which started when my wife got her new desktop a couple years ago and started using the built-in tuner function to record TV shows and movies. She rapidly filled her hard drive, so occasionally I'll buy a 500 gig HD to clean everything off her computer for her.

No, though I do back up my important stuff to DVD. Of course, it is almost unnecessary as much of my stuff is mirrored across two separate PCs, each carrying drivers for the other if needed, but the DVDs just make me feel better.

yes, they are essential for data loss prevention. i've lost 150 gigs of data over the years, never again.

Got a LaCie NAS. Connects directly to the network. Mac sees it as a Samba server, and Windows sees it in Network Neighborhood.

No, but enjoyed reading all the answers. Some VERY good comments.

Yes I do. For back up sourse, and word and picture files. Keeping the internal hard drive as clutter free as possible helps with overall performance.

Yep. Gonna get another one, too. They are great for storing files on. I like to keep my C drive clear and just use it for my programs. Keeps it faster and less chance of a crash.

I have 2 actually. Video editing takes up a lot of space. If I kept all of that stuff on my actual hard drive, my computer would be so insanely bogged down and full right now, it's not even funny.
