Respect everyone, but maintain a healthy skepticism.

It is better to teach a child to respect everyone regardless of ethnic background. Respecting ethnic background is part of respecting other people. If you do not teach a child to respect other people the child is going to be ill equipped to go into life with people of all backgrounds. For example, that child might be the employee of someone of a different ethnic background... s/he had better be able to be respectful. It would be better for the child not to be raised racist for the child and the people around him/her. Raising a child racist, not respectful of ethnic background, is setting that child up for a lifetime of hatred from within, being subject to the less tolerant of racism climate of today, and flat out setting him/her to fail in any place they have to deal with people of different ethnicities. Work is one of them. So, I think that RESPECT and tolerance of all should be taught. Not just ethnicity but religion and sexual orientation. It is all a matter of manners.

Children learn by example, treat the with respect and they in turn will treat other people with respect. However, as stated by Moongri, they need to learn to be on their guard too.
