  • because maybe the person who you talked to is like so boring, time to cut them off. :(
  • Sometimes the person you are talking to is going on and on about something and you're trying to be polite, sometimes the computer is having difficulties or you're doing multiple things and it's a distraction to talk to someone at the moment.
  • Sometimes, people log onto messaging services just to see who's online, not to open the door to anyone who wants to chat. Marking yourself as away lets the online community know you're there but not in the mood for a casual chat just yet. Now there's a phenomenon that is new to our culture. Imagine walking into a party with a sign around your neck, 'don't talk to me - if I'm interested, I'll come talk to you'. But seriously, it is a polite way to deal with the fact that you can't invest in a conversation at the moment. Better to warn them off now than disappoint them after they strike up a chat, no?
  • its a one way of getting rid of some people who you find boring to have a conversation with or sometimes you were just simply not in a mood to talk to all people who will probably pm you when they see you online in a polite way.. or sometimes you were away for real and forgot to change your status.. :p
  • because you don't want to talk to anybody. Like if you're at your desk doing homework on the computer or work or something you would put your away message up. Of course, it's better just to sign off but some people so that.
  • Avoiding someone?
  • Yes, if I don't want to speak with someone, it gives m a reason not to answer them when they talk to me, I know it sounds a bit harsh, but it is necessary at times.
  • Sometimes I do that because if someone is online and i dont feel like talking to them i put it on or sometimes i dont want to IM anyone i just wanna go on otehr things.
  • There may be people on that you don't want to talk to right then...and someone may sign on that you would like to talk to. That's my reason anyway.
  • What's the point of signing off when you can just go away and come back later? I usually leave my AIM on 24/7. Even though I'm away most of the time, it lets my friends know what I'm doing and gives them a chance to leave me messages. It also allows me to talk to some people and ignore others at the same time. :)
