I believe that the word you're thinking of is "ideologues." It's probably not a compliment if it reflects a devotion to Ideology--without looking at its effects on the Real World. A fitting example that comes to mind is Tax Cutting, which seem to be the only remedy that Republican ideologues believe will remedy ALL of our economic problems. One tax cut during the Kennedy Administration Did work according to design, but I don't recall of any others having the same result. But, of course, "Don't confuse me by giving me the Facts!"
