From several minutes to several days, depending upon the size and shape of the stone. I've had about one per year ever since I was about 14, and they can be relatively painless, or put you in the hospital.

I literally just passed a kidney stone! Mine was 4mm I am a 28 year old Male. The stone took 8 days to pass. The first five days were very painful but eventually you became used to the pain. The best think you can do is drink water and cranberry juice. Once you become used to the pain start moving around whenever possible. This is going to be a very painful process so get ready and get a loved one to help you. If the hospital said that you can pass it on your own then you probably can. Going back and dealing with waiting will prob just waste your time. Good Luck! And keep drinking!!!!

There is NO need to wait several days for a kidney stone to pass anymore anymore .... They have sonic blaster tubs that you sit in and they use sonic waves to destroy the kidney stones .... something like that ...
