  • As Gaeilge, it has been known as both an Mhuir éireann (the Irish Sea) or an Mhuir Meann (the Manx Sea). In Roman times, the Irish sea was known as Oceanus Hibernicus (Hibernia being the Roman name for Ireland). I've also heard it referred to in the ancient Irish oral tradition (pre-Roman) as 'Locian'. I don't know when 'the Irish Sea' became the norm, I guess around the same time as modern English began to be spoken (15th century onwards).
  • I dont like that you put this question in the 'British Empire' part :-P
