A Web Bug is an Object - mostly a graphics or image file but not limited to - that is embedded in an Email Message or on a Web page for monitoring information like IP Address, is the message being read, is the message being forwarded, the time the message is being viewed etc. They are often embedded inside the web page as invisible or typically 1-by-1 pixel objects. They are also known as tracking bug, "1-by-1 GIFs", "invisible GIFs", web beacons, pixel tag etc. They are typically used by online ad networks for the purpose of profiling. It has statistical purposes too.

it sounds like a virus, but it's really a tracker. it's a counter embedded in files so that it can track who has accessed a file.
