Water, in its natural state, is more or less chemically unresponsive. It does not react to most substances strongly. Your tongue is essentially a complex network of chemical sensors designed to detect specific types of compounds. Pure water does not react with any of these sensors, therefore you taste nothing. You would feel the pressure and cold, but have no sensation of taste. The only time water has a taste is when something has been added to it. Be it metal runoff from pipes, chemical agents to clense the water, flavoring for your Kool-Aid, or whatever else, you will taste the additives not the water. (He said explain...)
