The dog, it probably wont mug me.

the way things are now, neither one, stray dogs can be killers and stray people can be stranded killers. i will call for help 911 is my friend.
-
The dog would be less likely to carjack me. I'd stop for the dog.
-
The person.

I may stop for the stranded person, like about 50 feet away with the car in gear and the window cracked open just enough to hear him/her. I also would flash my bright lights on the first to see them better. Also, depends where this occurs.

Depends on a whole lot of things too many to list here. If the scene was exactly as you described, i'd probably stop for both... However i would thoroughly check out the situation as i approached, for a setup of some type. Wouldn't rush in blindly. As for the human, it happens, but there are bandits that do this all the time. Set the scene up and you stop , and then out of the darkness come the bandits. All for helping anyone, but i've learned to be aware.

Most likely not. Unless I knew the person.

Hmmm, both, dog first so I'd have an ally? Seriously, I'd stop for the person, but I'd stop far enough away that he/she would have to walk to me. That way if there is an accomplice hiding in the bushes or behind the car, he/she would either have to leave him behind or I'd see him. If its late at night and I have any reservations about the setup, I'd call police instead. I would not leave them stranded. I've had that happen to me and its a really scary feeling. You are at the mercy of anyone who wants to pick you off. Over the years I've rescued some pretty vulnerable people off the road, including an elderly black family traveling with her even older mother. An elderly mother and two middle aged daughters, one of whom was a paraplegic polio survivor and a young couple with a broke down car who had broken down 14 times in two weeks and were completely out of money. I always at least get them to a safe place. In the last case, I was able to repair the car myself and get them back on the road. I wouldn't leave the dog stranded either, if I could help it.

Yes,out here in the country,I have picked up many folks stranded,,come on,if someone is walking down a stretch you know is 5 miles long, without a house or farm on,would you really drive by>
-
First I would help the stranded person who can follow the guidance and then I would help the stray dog which needs more help from me.
