How did the Captain Kirk persona become so popular? Is it something I wouldn't understand unless I watched it? I have never seen a full episode of Star Trek.

This type of persona is interesting to some, and not to others. I never understood the popularity of the Simpson's either, or a long list of other things. It is just something you either enjoy, or you don't.

Oh, you HAVE to see Trek to understand it. Captain Kirk is colourful, charismatic, reckless, afraid of nothing, able to talk himself out of anything, and he gets all the chicks. Who wouldn't want to be him?

I think it helps to be raised watching it. In retrospect it is cheesy overacting and ridiculous speeches. You can watch the whole series for free at cbs.com
