They need positive role-models - teachers, mentors, other reliable family members and friends - to educate them, to help them un-learn the destructive ways they were originally taught. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to get that when those positive role-models are working 2 or 3 jobs to support their own children, when the teachers are burned-out from over-crowded, poorly-funded classrooms, and when a kid repeatedly gets the message that very little or nothing is expected from him or her.

Love. when a child is loved they will be less likely to become swallowed up into the abysmal aspects of life.

Consistency. I think kids need to feel that even if the world is a confusing place that the support people around them will treat them fairly, justly and with the same amount of love tomorrow as today and yesterday. I think every parent struggles to provide that, when they themselves have problems, conflicts to resolve and are not always sure which way to go. You can't choose who your parents are and you can't change some situations; you can only work on yourself and your own reactions.
