  • I don't think anyone has become a perfect player yet. Even pros who have been playing 40 or 50 years are still learning new things and improving. It will take about 3 or 4 months to begin to like what you hear yourself playing. You can get reasonably good in a year and maybe even be ready for a band or an open mic session. After two years you will begin to feel better about your playing, and by this time you might have even decided to give up guitar, or to practice even harder and take it seriously. The 18 month to 2 year mark is a big turning point! You can get started with a used guitar for about $60. You could also rent a guitar to start, but that might cost more than what you can get a used guitar for. Lessons are highly recommended if not absolutely necessary. Private lessons are usuallly $15 to $25 per week. A guitar class is more economical. I just taught a 17 week class, 2 hours per week for $154. That's about $4.50 an hour! Good luck. Remember, don't expect it to happen too fast, perfection takes time. Also remember that you'll have to practice almost every day. You only get out of this what you put in to it.
