Yes, I think in modern poetry it's mainly down to looking nice on the page... lots of my current reads do it mainly for visual purposes. But others have more idiosyncratic ones.
The reason I ask is I because I was listening to an old recording of Yeats reading the LAke Isle of Innesfree... and he had such an odd *thumpy* way of reading it. Verged on unpleasant. :os
