That super high setting that turns your simple bread into charcoal does a great job on english muffins, bagels, and sometimes frozen pastries. Besides - some decent people do like their toast on the crispy side.
Because there is a guy in every factory who went to a school of electronics to learn about things like that, and had high-feluting dreams of ferraris and all sorts. First day at Hobbs- 'we'd like you to design a toaster'. A friend speeds by with ferrari and amazing woman next to him. 'Right you gits' he thinks- '1 it'll be freezing, 2 nada, but 3 and it'll set your house on fire! Mwahaha!'

hmmm. what an interesting question.. maybe its so they can frustrate us... you should make a toaster that doesnt, that way you sell billions =p

There are other things that can be toasted that need the higher temperature.
Crumpets need to be on that setting so that they're not soggy
The higher setting are great for frozen bread and frozen waffles. Plus, it comes in handy for thick food like bagels, and you can use it to warm up your hands when you finish cleaning the pool filter in the colder months. (No you don't put your hands in it, just hold them over.
