I try to emulate my grandfather who was firm, strong and emotionally detached from most things in life; who was a hard worker and kept to himself, ignoring society and segregating himself from it; and who was fair, pragmatic and open-minded. I loved my grandmother as well, but I try not to wear her genial and compassionate personality, only because people walk all over those who do evoke such attributes, and I despise most people.

I knew my maternal grandparents a bit better than my paternal ones, so I'll answer with my maternal ones in mind. I try to honor all of them (and other relatives and ancestors) with the genealogy and family history I've done. I try to emulate my grandfather's flexibility and determination. When hard times came, he was willing to do whatever it took in terms of work to provide for his family. Pride and rigidity didn't freeze frame him. He was able to transfer skills from one area to another and carry on, although they didn't use terms like that then. He didn't make a big deal about what he did each day. He just quietly got up, got dressed and went off to to what had to be done. I try to emulate my grandmother's big heart. She cared about people and was forever trying to help .. her neighbor .. or soldiers overseas .. or her local non-profit group. When busy? She always had time for someone .. to listen .. or give them a hug. So HEART and her willingness to stop, listen, care. They were pretty amazing people. I miss them. They taught me a lot - by example.
