I would assume that loco safety equipment is pretty similar world wide. Most loco's have a 'dead man' which is a lever, button or pedal that has to be constantly depressed for the brakes to be released. If the driver suddenly died, the dead man would be released applying the emergency brakes. On advanced loco's if the dead man is not re-activated in a pre set amount of time, a distress message gets broadcasted to control and occassionally to train carriages.
