There are a couple of reasons why this could be. The first and simplest problem that would cause this is low fluid level. The transmission uses its fluid for many things - all vital to its correct operation. Firstly the torque converter usually draws its fluid from the transmission. Low fluid levels can stop the torque converter from operating correctly. The gears themselves are engaged by clutches within the transmission. These clutches are hydraulically powered, and use - you guessed it - the transmission's fluid to provide pressure. Failure of either the torque converter or the clutch packs to operate properly will result in the transmission slipping. Auto transmissions also use their fluid for cooling. The next step I'd look at is the oil strainer/filter - most auto transmissions have some form of filter and/or strainer to clean the oil. Any transmission with an external oil cooler will have one. If these are blocked, then the oil can't get through fast enough, which would starve the supply of fluid. This will have a similar effect to lack of fluid. If these are not the problem, then maybe you have a blocked oil passage within the transmission. Same thing, but you'd need to get the transmission looked at by a professional to fix this. The only other things I can think of that would cause 'slip' would be worn clutches or faulty clutch activation mechanisms. If it's an electronically controlled auto, then there may even be an electronic problem, but that is very rare. Usually it's a problem with fluid or wear within the transmission.

If my car back fires, what is the likely problem I'm experiencing and can this be repaired?

The gears may be slipping and worn down. Have it checked out for your own good.

Have the filter and fluid changed,ASAP.When changing the fluid substitute 1 bottle of "Lucas Transmission Fix" when refilling.
