I read about someone the other day with a button phobia and the strange thing is that it didn't apply to metal or wooden buttons, just plastic ones. The girl in question said she couldn't wear or carry anything with plastic buttons on because they made her squirm.

Nictaphobia. Hope I spelled it right. Johnny Carson explained that he had it. The fear of being naked in small room and backing into a door knob. He related this during a Tonight Show interview a long time ago. Trolls, Please remember he was a comedian.

Well, a phobia means being afraid of something, like spiders, or the dark, or clowns. I can't pick out the strangest phobia I've ever heard of, there are so many. Mine's kind of bland: I hate to see people brushing their teeth. It gives me the creeps to see someone foaming at the mouth!

The people who want to be amputees don't have a phobia about having all their limbs.

    1. They have what is called a "fetish" or a "paraphilia" if they think that being an amputee is sexually desirable.

    2. If they don't have sexual reasons for it, they might be described as having a "psychosis" if they believe that being an amputee is how they are supposed to be. A psychotic person doesn't share the same reality as the rest of us.

    3. If their condition isn't quite that bad, they might be described as having a "neurosis" that is not as dangerous as being psychotic. They might manifest a desire for self-mutilation through getting into extreme body mods, like unusual piercings or having toes removed to fit into fashionable shoes better, but not getting into major amputations.

I have a phobia of my own. I have an incredibly, unrealistic fear of monkeys. For some reason just seeing one sends me into a panic and I worry about my very life. To me they seem so evil. They are so much stronger than what most people like to admit. A chimpanzee could tear a man apart with his strong, frequently used muscles. It must take a lot of strength to swing around all day! I imagine the fact that they are intelligent also intimidates me.

I don't think that apotemnophilia, the desire to become an amputee is technically a phobia. It is a "philia," or a sort of identity disorder.

I looked at some of those phobia lists- It must be really hard to live with some of those phobias. My heart goes out to people with phobias.
