I gave my daughter a cell phone the summer before she started high school. I think that each parent should decide on their own child's maturity level. We just took hers away again because she is getting poor grades. She has until this summer to have at least all C's, or we are shutting it off. I got a cell phone when I was 23.

When they became old enough to be out of my sight for any length of time. Like when they started riding the bus. I felt it necessary in this day and age... If they enjoyed them at all, that simply wasn't the point.

i would say 15-16 when they start driving and what not. i was about 18 i think.

I think kids don't need cell phones unless they'll be spending a lot of time without their parents. Like if they're involved in a lot of sports or after school activities that the parents don't hang around for, I could rationalize getting my kids one just so they could call me if they got finished early. I didn't have a cell phone until I was out of high school.

I think it depends on the maturity level of the child. My bf's son is 13 and is not responsible enough to have one. But my 13 year old nephew on the other hand is more mature and does have a cell phone. I didnt get one until I was about 18.

I am amazed at the number of people who provide their kids with cell phones. I never got one for my kids and didn't have one myself until last year when my employer insisted that I carry one during business hours. They provide and pay for it. It is possible to live well and safe without a cell phone. If my kids were into long distance driving I would see a cell phone as a positive, but for daily life? No. There are phones available to communicate anything that needs to be communicated. Plans made before-hand and followed eliminate the need for a lot of calls.

My dad said i could have a car when i could pay for it and support it. I had no problem with that. I'm sure he would say the same for a cell phone. I go along with my dad.
