I believe that culture shapes the lexicon--your environment and surroundings influence your lexicon. But language does shape culture, too. Won't go off on anthrop theory, but this has been a huge argument amongst anthropologists for decades.

Google: Sapir-Wharf hypothesis. I personally, agree more with the 'weak' version of the hypothesis.
