Does paying money and seeing tragedy movies make sense? Aren't we paying out of our pocket to cry?

Yes. The cathartic value of crying over someone else's tragedy can relieve a lot of the pain we build up and find difficult to express. It is a vicarious cleansing experience and it sometimes gives us coping tools.
