I don't know the answer to your question.....I just pray for everyone on that flight.

AT that speed water is just as hard as concrete. Was it a small plane or a Jet liner?

"NEW YORK — A US Airways plane crashed into the frigid Hudson River this after striking a bird that disabled two engines, sending 150 on board scrambling onto rescue boats, authorities say. No deaths or serious injuries were immediately reported." Link - http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6213384.html

They are saying that they are pretty sure everyone got out alive. US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320

It probably floated by your house, Fun!;) I was at work, missed the whole thing. The bus I was riding on to work today hit and killed someone, so I was late for the first time in years.

By now we know they all survived due to the miraculous pilot, crew, boats in the area, other people helping people..your Governor has called it The Miracle on the Hudson. Surely it is a miracle..a perfect wave of everything falling into place exactly perfectly to produce this outcome. Happy Friday, Fun! :) ((hugs))

They say it actually makes rescue harder. Fortunately, New York City is well-equipped to handle water rescue (no thanks to Staten Island Ferry pilots... *eyeroll*). I live in Tampa now, and most of our planes take off and land over water. If that had happened here, I'd hate to think what would have happened to those people.

No, ditching usually results in fatalities as the aircraft breaks apart so the fact that everyone survived and the aircraft came to a stop intact is a testement to the Pilot's skill and a bunch of luck. My local newspaper ran the story this morning with recounts of other airline ditches in the past. Every single instance but one, killed people. The exception was a Russian aircraft that ditched in St Petersburg.

I don't think so, but in this case it was the river or mid-town Manhattan which certainly would have resulted in fatalities. The pilot made the correct choice and did an awesome job landing the plane and getting everyone out safely.
