hey...for breathing when lifting weights, i find the best is to breathe in when you are lifting the weight, and breathe out when you are returning to the resting state (ie when you are putting the weight down)...

When lifting weight or working muscles against resistance, exhale through the mouth as you are performing the work, which means you should breath out when you are lifting the weight! Caution: Failure to breathe correctly during heavy weight lifting may cause drastic increases in blood pressure that may be harmful.

Breathing is very important in weightlifting, it supply's valuable oxygen to the muscle tissue. Water and high protein diets are useless without proper breathing technique. Yoga is a good way to learn how to train your body to breath, you may think you know how to, but proper training by a yoga instructor will help you get the real gains you want. It also has the fringe benefit of helping you to relax and meditate on your body, which is good for physical and mental wellbeing. According to Mens Fitness Mag, Oct 2004, and my Golds Gym Instructor. You inhale the resistance and exhale the release. As you lower the benchpress to your chest you inhale, this expands the muscles in your chest so you get that barrel chest and apollo's belt around your waist. Hold for a count of two to three then slowly exhale as you extend the barbell back out. A good rule is to inhale (slowly) when you encounter resistance, and exhale (slowly) when you counter it. Try to time your breathing with the motion of the exercise.

you should inhale when you are lifting the weight and exhale when u are putting the weight down. doing the oppostie is easier but can be dangerous because 1) it will increase you blood presser 2) your muscles need more oxygen when u are lifting the weight AND HOW CAN U GET ENOUGH OXYGEN TO UR MUSCLES WHEN U ARE BREATHING WRONG???

I suggest a person should do a little experimentation when it come to " inhale or exhale ". Perform the exercise, breathing in, or out, holding your breath at some point in the movement, if nessessary, then decide which of these made you feel the best at accomplishing your sets and repetitions.

You should intake air when you are not exerting yourself so that the oxygen will be in the blood when you exert. So for example, when doing bench press, your breathing should match the motion of the bar. Exhale when pushing and inhale while lowering.

Holding your breath while lifting is called the Valsalva Maneuver. Your windpipe closes and the pressure in your chest rises. This reaction also occurs when you are coughing or vomiting. Not so good, huh? Holding your breath may cause: * Dizziness and fainting * nausea * Headaches * Hypertension * Heart attack * Hernia * stroke * Glaucoma

Basic rule - blow the weight away from you.
