  • I hate the cutesy stuff that, until recently, was mostly a prob on Macs. Now PCs are starting to fill up with cute stuff, too. The people that make the programs must think there are enough customers who'll buy anything with the most or flashiest options.
  • 1) The programs are more and more complex, as long as performance allows it. The flashy and colorful features are just supposed to give you more easiness of use and fun on your computer. When you use too many of those things, you could lose somewhat on performance, but this won't be relevant for most applications. Performance was what really mattered until the Nineties. Now it still matters, but there are much less bottlenecks, usually. And we concentrate more on other things. 2) "if you have a reasonably powerful PC the flashy features don't have a noticeable effect on performance, and make for a more pleasant working environment. It's like making a choice between having an attractive calendar on the wall and some potted greenery by your desk or keeping things spartan."
