  • I could not say that I despise lawyers. Just like people, there are good and bad lawyers. Some fight for good causes, others are immoral.
  • they say being a lawyer is the most dirtiest job you can have bcoz here, you'll make wrong things right and eventually make right things wrong for the sake of winning the case you are handling.. so its a war between two liars :p
  • Because people just don
  • I can tell you why some are not trusted and just as much a criminal as the people they represent. Burglary suspect arrested and taken before a magistrate. before proof given, an attorney walked in and offered to represent my suspect. i left them alone for a few minutes. suspect had no money, so he offered a ring, which was on his finger, as a down payment to the attorney. the attorney agreed and took the ring. i remembered a ring similar to this one, had been taken in another burglary case. i asked the attorney to see the ring. he agreed. inside were the initials of my burglary victim and the ring fit the color, size and description of the ring taken in the burglary. I now have two people under arrest. one is an attorney for concealing stolen property. The attorney lost his license. Is this a good reason?
  • I think Lawyers and Dentists have a pretty negative effect on the population. Lawyers are great, if they are ethical, and work hard for the client. Then again, put them on the other side of the fence and we tend to resent them.
  • I want to be a lawyer, their not all despised. Some are respected individuals and make positive difference in society. I know I would if I got the job. Lawyers are also often associated with just criminal lawyers. Many people fail to see that there are so many sects in law! e.g. family lawyers, commercial law etc I know many lawyers are not trustworthy, but that can be said about many professionals. I think it's because of the way the are portrayed in the media, which gives them a negative image.
  • Because they treat everyone like children? It's like adults are faced with judgement from their parents again. I can't find the story, but it's been on the news that some guy paid a mother so he could sleep with her 8 year old daughter. And guess who the lawyer is in the case, the guy's girl friend. So the offendent is the lawyer's boyfriend, and the lawyer is going easy on him of corse, makes me sick.
  • I think its the nature of the profession and sheer jealousy. They are not all despised. Some are merely misunderstood. (I said that on the advice on my attorney).
  • Because they make a lot of money, and a lot of people are jealous of others who make more than them.
  • Because we can't afford them, and when we need help, and can't get it because of money, we resent that fact.
  • They charge you huge amounts off money, and you usually only see them when you are in trouble. Two things that have big negatives attached to them.
  • I don't have an real answer but i think that a couple of bad ones gave the rest a bad name...
  • Because they cost taxpayers billions of dollars a year for our courts. They try frivolous cases, and the bottom line is how much money they get out of it.Don't beleive the movies about them depicting them with high morals and are genuinly trying to help their clients. They don't care if thier clients are guility or not.
  • they're all liers. disonest and they tell you want you want to hear.
  • they arn't always despised.
  • because the population consider them not havin a soul, but that might be because the majority of them are ruthless
  • Because there is a large percentage of them who are in it just for the money. The law, truth, justice, fair play, and all those other noble concepts which we assume to be part of the world they choose to work in, are made a mockery of by their cynical disregard for anything but how much profit they can make from the pain, suffering and misery of others. Corporate lawyers are some of the worst! They provide the protective legal insulation for major corporations to be able to pollute and ravage the environment with impunity. These lawyers are instrumental in the systematic rape of the planet. Big tobacco also relies heavily on the legal protection of teams of lawyers to fight off the hundreds of lawsuits against them as they ply their deadly trade in death. To be such a lawyer, requires the complete disposal of all moral and ethical fibre. Having said that, it must be remembered that there are also very caring and compassionate lawyers who believe passionately in what they do, fighting for the weak and defenseless. Some have even sacrificed their careers in order to see their clients receive justice; ironically, fighting AGAINST the very scum mentioned above!
  • Most of them are good people, just like any other group. The bad one's just get a lot of attention. WHat also happens is that a "bad" person will be released because a lawyer "tricked" the system. Usually these are sensationalized stories in which the general public is not aware of all the facts in the story and also not aware of the larger sstem of checks and balances in place. Maybe a guy goes free because his place is illegally serched. This is part of a high-level system for keeping the cops honest and the fact that one criminal went unpunished is considered an acceptable lose if it keeps the cops from trampling innocent people's civil rights. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you hear a story about some legal travesty, there is almost always some detail missing. Human rights and justice is necessarily a very large and complex field, and easily misunderstood by people who haven't spent a lot of time studying it.
  • Many people hate the fact that some of them make a living keeping some criminals, specially wealthy drug dealers, on the streets. That's the way the system works, everyone deserves the best defense he or she can afford...
  • Because people who benefit from lawyers just think they got their natural rights, and people who lose from them blame the gouging, incompetent, unthinking frauds rather than their own mistakes.
  • ? I don't despise Lawyers..... :[ Why should you despise them? They just need money and stuff...
  • Because finding Justice should be their job, instead of winning!
  • I don t.. I really like my attorney, he gives me advise on many things, contracts, property, ect.. I guess people think of them as sharks .
  • Lawyers are despised because their rates are so high that most people can't afford their services - yet, in most legal instances their services are necessary. The fact that their rates are so high is a huge injustice in the "justice" system because this causes people to suffer immeasurably due to being wrongfully imprisoned or wrongfully having civil money judgments issued against them because they can't afford the services of an attorney or the services of a good attorney.
  • In the business context in our culture lawyers are required for many things that a business person has to do. Most lawyers have very little practical or real world experience in business, but they feel that their education makes them an expert in just about everything. Just about anything that needs to get done in business can get held up by lawyers nitpicking things that just need to be accepted as risk in the deal. I am a lawyer and a businessperson and most lawyers drive me batty. There is a fine line between protecting a client and being a pain in the butt. Given the way that our society is structured we do need lawyers, but we have far far too many.

  • I don't think they really are. In todays complicated justice system lawyers are needed to help prosecute and protect the accused. Our law reflects the presumption of innocence. Unless you are a lawyer, you cannot protect yourself in such a complicated system. Lawyers do for an accused what he or she would do for themselfs if they could. Think of it this way, if you were charged with murder and faced execution, would you not try to be found not guilty? That's the defense lawyers job. Do for the accused what they cannot do for themselves because of the complexity of the system. If justice is to have a change this is a job that has to be done. It's not the lawyer who gets a person off, he only argues the case. It's the judge and/or jury that makes the decision based on the case and the law.
  • their like footballers they earn too much money
  • Because their very existence proves inequality in the judicial system, which in turn promotes an established anti-establishment message.
  • Because of the unethical behavior of a few and also because of the lengths some will go to "prove" their client innocent even when they know they are guilty. This, of course, is their job but it does not serve to make them more likeable, in some cases.
  • I don't suppose the fact that most of them are blood sucking leeches would have anything to do with it.
  • People tend to dislike attorneys because of the way they are portrayed on television and slammed negatively by the media. In actuality most attorneys are hard working honest people with a very strong ethical standard.
  • For the same reason people dislike cops. That is, most of the time when you have contact with a lawyer it is because you have a problem (or are in trouble) and it is going to cost you money. For example, if you are being sued you now need to pay money to maintain the status quo. If you have been harmed and want to sue someone, your recovery will be limited because some of the money will go to the lawyer.
  • Because attorneys have their eye on the money and not you. They chase people down(ambulance chasers) that are in bad situations, and cause the taxpayers a lot of money in court costs.I have little use for them. They seem to create more problems then they fix.
  • People dislike attorneys because they fail to realize that attorneys are like prostitutes...they are there to serve their clients' interests in exchange for money. If no one wanted to sue anyone else, there would be no need for civil litigation attorneys. If no one ever committed a crime, all of the prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys would be begging for spare change at street corners (in their Armani suits and tasseled loafers....;-D...) Do attorneys take advantage of and manipulate the system in which they function? Sure they do! Do you personally take advantage of every tax break you can to minimize what you pay? Sure you do! But we, the citizenry, determine what the system is. If it's important enough for us to change it, we will. There are other systems that could be implemented. In Saddam-era Iraq, criminal prosecutions were largely a matter of arresting someone and torturing that person until a confession was obtained. No need for lawyers. OTOH, we can envision a publicly-subsidized legal system where any money spent by one side of a legal dispute is matched by public funds available for the other side of the dispute. Thus, if MegaGlopCorp. tries to bury someone suing them over a defective product by hiring a fleet of lawyers, the plaintiff will get just a much money to spend to present his/her case. Such a system would tend to encourage people/organizations to settle their disputes using lawyers as little as possible. Will the legal profession resist changes to the status quo? Sure they will. They're only (sub)human....:-D... . . .
  • I think it's because of the few bad ones out there tht will work for any side no matter what. They are just for hire and will work so hard for the highest bidder even if they know they are guilty. And then there are the ambulance chasers who are always looking for people to sue other people and they harp on and on about your rights and how you need to fight for them in court, get what YOU deserve. But there are very good ones out there. It only take a few bad apples to spoil the whole barrel.
  • Not all attorneys are bad. I think litigation attorneys--ambulance chasers are crummy people who are interested only in money. I've met wonderful attorneys who represent children's welfare for social services, and attorneys who work for the United Nations.
  • People only dislike Attorneys when they are on the opposingor they have no need of help. What about the ones that go that extra mile to help people that really need help. Sure there are some bad ones in the ranks but there are a lot of good ones too. There are bad people in every profession including Law, but a few bad ones just give everyone a bad press. We all know the press is never right with its stories. (another myth)
  • Because most are as phony as a politician and in many cases are one and the same.
  • Maybe because of their high cost? I myself can not say I dislike any attorney. I've known many in my life time. And even worked with a few. Why if you want to get right down to it. We who claim to be true Christians for the Holy God, have been given the power of "attorney" through His Son JESUS CHRIST. So see my Friend, not all attorneys are bad. Just many of us come with a high price.............M.C.S.
  • i dislike my (ex) attorney because he was a lazy ass and i got royally screwed over due to his lax attitude about my case.
  • I dislike defence attorneys who defend criminals that are obviously guilty. You know, the ones who keep our planet littered with human trash? Ya, them. They do it for the money and/or just to win. Dispicable!
  • Johnny Cochran...O.J.Simpson. Multiply that thousands and millions or maybe even hundreds of millions...that's why.
  • Legalized prostitution has been a controversial issue for a long time now. The fact that this particular group happens to screw people while wearing designer wool suits doesn't make it any more palatable. :)
  • I do not dislike or hate all attorneys. Mine is a wonderful miracle-worker.
  • 90% of them give the rest of them a bad name. (Second answer) For the same reason we detested hired guns... totally amoral moneygrubbers who would defend the Devil if there was money in it for them. Mainly, though, because they totally resist any attempt at reforming the system, such as instituting a "loser pays all legal costs" law, or making barratry (contingency fees) as illegal in the USA as it is in most of the rest of the world. Because they get into politics and devote themselves chiefly to making life easier and more profitable for attorneys. Because of bottom-feeding thieves like John Edwards, lining his pockets with riches by gaming the legal system to steal it from doctors who actually earned it, and in the meantime vastly increasing the number of Caesarean sections without any positive effect on the number of healthy-born children. "A Democrat lawyer got rich On medical lawsuits with which Through legal extortion He stole a huge fortune-- That's Edwards, the son of a (bachelor)!"
  • I think they dont like the ones who keep killers and rapist and pedophiles out on the street and get lots of money for doing it but on the other hand if they hire a lawyer because of an accident or a divorce the lawyer is good because he is helping them.
  • They are thieves. Stay out of Pearland Texas when looking to hire one!
  • Because 99% of lawyers give the rest of us a bad name!
  • Having worked with them for years I can say it is for two reasons: 1) They think strategically, unfettered by such inhibiting factors as morality. Ethically, maybe, but only in a contractually binding sense. But moral? no. Even the ones who are great people in many ways: I would be certain of them suing me for my last dollar if I accidentally harmed them. 2) They are adversarial by nature and by years of training. This means that they instinctively are on guard against anyone who contends them, and do so automatically in any arena of life, even to the destruction of their own family and home situation. Everyone has to bend to them, and they will continue talking until they win their point, even if they end up ruining everything. My psychologist friends term attorney behaviour as "phallic narcissism."
  • My reasons... 1) They are very costly. 2) They will defend people who are known to have engaged in criminal behavior and will use technicalities and loopholes to try to ensure they get a light or no punishment. 3) Many have smug attitudes because they think they are smarter than everyone else. I do think there are many good men and women employed in the legal field but many are just void of any human emotions and are money and power hungry.
  • They Lie bottom line. They get people suckered in by convincing them that they would handle their case with promise's and once you sign that dotted line your screwed. You don't need to see that on tv .
  • Most people never deal with attorneys until they really need one. Thus they tend to associate attorneys with uncomfortable, expensive situations. Also, attorneys charge large sums of money and what you get for your bucks doesn't seem impressive. If you get sued, it's the fault of some damn attorney. The flip side is that some sly attonrey can get someone else out of trouble when they really deserve punishment. Attorneys, for example, got O. J. Simpson off from a murder charge. On the other hand, attorneys help countless people out of trouble. When you get into trouble you turn to an attorney. Mostly they are hard-working, god fearing upstanding citizens who have families and hobbies just like everybody else. They are highly educated, study continuously to keep up with ever-changing laws and try their hardest to do a good job. Personally, I think they're great, exciting people to talk with and do a tremendous servcie for this country.
  • I have a couple of very good friends who are attorneys. I love them :) I remember when I received the itemized bill from my divorce lawyer and for about a half second, I got mad at her, then I remembered that she freed me of one INSANE ball and chain! Of course there are attorneys who lie and cheat, but that is true in every profession.
  • They serve themselves more than they serve justice is the common perception which I believe is close to reality.
  • Everybody hates 'em, until they need 'em.
  • As with minorities, and idiots (no comparison THERE, please), the vocal minority screw it up for the ... less vocal majority. AND, there are too many "ambulance chasers" and those who want to try class-action suits (to make a name for themselves, and make money - in most CA suits, the ATTORNEYS make the money... The people get a few bucks or "satisfaction".)
  • I dont dislike attorneys..why should i ? They are people like any of us
  • I think it is because we are always present in a conflict. We are the ones who make one person happy and anothr sad, or in some cases both people sad. Because we are in the middle of conflict as part of our job we often become the sybol or object of people's hate. Someone is always being "Screwed by the lawyer"
  • Why WOULDN'T they be? I know this a bit more than most because I'm a paralegal. It is true that they put their self-serving interests before actually pursuing justice. The judges are sick too. The whole system is sick.
  • Next to religion, lawyers have been the greatest contributor to the fall of America's morality and everything that was considered sacred and good. They're like the locusts, they destroy everything in their path
  • Maybe its because they brief their clients on what good alibis to use in their defence. And they defend people that they know are guilty and let these criminals back onto the streets to offend again.
  • Because they screw you up.
  • Because their job requires them to lie. It is very often that both lawyers know the truth, but they must let the court figure it out.
