Why does AB's spellchecker still think that "DVD" is misspelled? Is AB a little behind the times?

Don't be silly. Spellchecks rarely recognize abbreviations as words.

It should technically be D.V.D., although I've almost never seen it presented that way.

AB doesn't have a spellchecker that I know of. The spellchecker you speak of is probably the one incorporated into FireFox.

AB doesn't have a spell checker but FireFox2 does. Just right click the word and click Add To Dictionary and it will not be marked wrong anymore.
