  • You either need someone familiar with the grant writing process, or skilled enough to pick it up quickly, who will, for a reasonable amount, do all of the actual grunt work of the application for you, including finding out where to submit the grant if you get someone who really knows their stuff. Or you need to learn all of that yourself. I'd also advise trying sources other than straight up grants, such as micro funding through community banking associations and perhaps entrepeneurial funding. In this case, you will also need to be prepared to show a viable business model (which is not a bad idea regardless of the approach you decide to take) and preferably something that makes you stand out from any similar business' in your area. If the business itself is not part of a larger business or organization that already has charitable status, I'd advise you to register for that as soon as possible as it helps in the grant application process. Some states, such as Michigan (if I remember correctly) also give small interest free loans and/or grants to business' that are started by women or minorities and that also might be worth looking into.
