When I hit 65 in March, all rides on the MBTA drop to less than a buck. I think it's still 65 cents. The Salvation Army thrift already lets me in on their weekly Senior's day. Everything 50% off marked price. :)

Age 63

Usually at age 55. We live in a senior community and it is "55+". That might shock some, but that is the way it is here in Hemet. :)

well different places different ages some restaurants its 55 like our little local one in town where we eat the most but others in next town are 60 at the second hand store where we go they offer a discount on Mondays of 15% the school where I go the discount for seniors is for free In NV at the casino's they do 50 at some of them, only know this because we were at one and hubby got a senior discount at a restaurant, he thought it was so funny, he had to tell everyone he got his first senior discount, "He said all his grey hair finally paid off" So I guess there all over the board around here.

In Scotland you get free bus travel everywhere after the age of 60. If you look old and grizzled as I do, it's always worth asking for a pensioner's discount. The state pension for men is paid out at the age of 65 for men, 60 for women, which is illogical because women have a higher expectation of further life than men. The paying out of pensions is likely to change. We baby-boomers didn't have enough children to work and pay for our pensions, and because most us work out and have healthy diets, we are all living too long (for the government) so the plan is pay the state pension out at 67 for men and women (I think). It won't be a popular change.

As you have pointed out, the age a person becomes a "senior citizen" varies. Each company or agency is free to set their own standards. There is no specific age that is written in stone. AARP sets their age at 55 because they can attract more advertising dollars and have more political clout with more members. The local restaurant sets theirs at 65 because that way they don't have to discount as many meals. The IRS full retirement benefits is currently flexible, and moving older and older, because the taxpayers don't want to pay any more than they have to.
