It totally depends upon the person and their receptiveness to the ideas and thoughts put forth by their therapist. Some people never 'get it', and never change their behaviors; others get it and refuse to change, and still others benefit. There are many problems abusive people can have. They can be based upon a lack of empathy with their victims, an abnormal desire for control of their victims, a lack of respect, a mental illness, chemical imbalance, ad nauseum. It usually takes a minimum of three months of therapy to begin to see a change -- or it may take a lifetime. You just never know. Therapy, like individuals, has to be tailored to the individual -- and like the individual it is treating, is never 100% predictable.
