im not from the uk, but the word is uesd a lot in NZ, it is a degratory term for a .....well an idiot, some one who is a tosser ( lol, now thats another english term) a bore, a know it all, some one who people dont really like..........

Im not entirely sure what 'jerkoff' means but if its what I think then thats closer to the meaning of 'wanker' than 'dickhead'...... If that makes any sense! It isn't one of the worst words but you certainlt wouldn't say it in polite company!

wanking is another word for masturbating, so i suppose a wanker is what you'd call a jerk?

Whilst wanker literally means masturbator it is a casual insult intended to mean that the person is simply a waste of time, pathetic, ineffectual etc., It's become so 'normal' it's no longer considered too rude even for kids to say - and unfortunately lots of them do!
