Hang on... you have a *mechanical* mouse with a rolling ball? *cough* Ok. The pause was just to allow me to dig deeper into the memory for this :) Mice with rolling balls almost always had some way to remove the ball so you could clean the mechanism. Look carefully at the housing around the ball, and see if there's a way to un-twist a section so the ball will come out. Then use swabs and alcohol, etc. to clean the rollers inside, clean the ball itself, and snap it all back together with a satisfied *thwick*!. You have a museum piece. Take good care of it! :)

Unfortunately the quickest and easiest way to fix that is with a replacement mouse. If its less than 1 year old you should be able to get a free replacement under warranty.

The solution to this problem is to get a clean piece of paper. Then turn the mouse upside down and move the mouse scroll ball around on the paper gently. Don't push too hard or the ball will rub away, just do it gently until it starts scrolling in all directions again. Thanks to Porkpie at The macosxhints Forums for this suggestion. Hope this helps. http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=92509
