• Actually, what you describe is auditing. "Training" is what Scn'ists refer to as taking courses. Some of the courses have auditing on them, many do not. The ones that do have auditing on them teach the person TO audit. Some are "co-audit" which means one would learn how to audit and would receive auditing from another student also learning. Some courses have no auditing. Most Scn courses have drills, essays, "practicals" (where one puts the idea into practice and tries it out in some way) stuff to read, "checkouts" (where another student or course supv reviews the material with the person to see if they understand it).

• They're not scary, IMO. They're just communication drills. They actually can be fun and enjoyable. The TRs are taught on intro courses but many of the later intermediate or advanced courses have the person refresh him or herself on them, albeit more briefly.

• No, these are courses where a person studies. Auditing is similar to psychotherapy in many ways, yes. I always thought there were a lot of similarities there. But "Training" is the courses the person takes to learn how to audit or to do a certain "post" (working as a staff member in the cult) or to study or learn how to do other things.
