  • I could be wrong but I think I heard once that in China they give the family name as the first name instead of the last name.
  • Remember Kim Il-Sung who preceeded Kim Jong-Il as Premier of North Korea. Works the same way in China. China is beginning to change to the Western system, so it's a confused situation. Some Chinese indicate which is their surname by underlining or use of all caps.
  • Chinese custom is to put the family name first, then the personal name. So Yau Ming is Ming from the Yau family, just as Chairman Mao Tze-dong was Tse-Dong from the Mau family and his wife was known in the west as Mrs Mao. Footballers put their family names on their jersey, so he does too.
  • The Chinese put the family name (surname) first. Example: Shumway Gordon.
