If electromagnetic waves are just waves travelling through a number of planes of magnetism, then why does a magnet not distort them?

Magnets don't bend light. However, a magnetic field can bend a beam of charged particles such as electrons. In fact, that's the principle that enables a tube-screen TV set to produce an image.
