That's debatable. I personally don't think it's a wrong thing to do. When they are giving negative points they are basically just saying "thumbs down" to the answer or question.

I agree with you. I would never give neg points for something I didn't agree with but I would definately neg someone for being offensive though. I suppose some people can't handle being disgreed with.

I give negative points when someone is INTENTIONALLY trying to upset people. If there is a difference of opinion it opens the door to debate and learning...I usually give +points for that. If however, someone is TRYING to upset, then I will give -

Under the rating buttons it says "rate answer." It does not say "warning: only give negative points when the answer is negative or abusive." Therefore, I use those buttons to actually rate questions and answers. If I think they are good, I give them positive ratings, if I think they're bad, I give them negative ratings. It really is quite simple.

Some people are very zealous about their point giving ability... they might feel it gives them some power to express how they really feel... but hang on there... good answers will always get good points eventually ... or so I hope.
