What exactly is cheating in a relationship besides sex? Is there a textbook answer, or is cheating just whatever offends the other person?

Cheating isn't simply "what offends the other person". A lot of people get offended for (for lack of a better word) stupid reasons. Cheating is an act of deception and the breaking of developed trust. It doesn't always have to involve sex, but any time that you have to keep something important from someone else, I feel that you're cheating on them. Now, this doesn't apply to things that need to be kept for certain reasons. Saving money to buy your partner a car without their knowing, for example, isn't cheating, but talking to another woman online with the intent of becoming romantically involved is.

To me cheating is an emotional and/or physical investment (relationship) that is a substitute for the intimacy in your marriage (or primary relationship).

If each of us has our own meaning for the words we use, communication between each other becomes very difficult. Of course, if we are talking about what a couple defines between themselves as the #2 meaning of cheating, then it's different for every couple. For that matter, the same is true of the #1 meaning. A couple who have agreed to have an open relationship might not regard adulterous behavior as cheating on the part of their mate. But they would almost certainly regard betrayal as cheating.

Besides sex, you have checking out and flirting with oppsite sex. Lets see... looking at porn online, I guess, because it appears you are more interested in the women/men online than your actual mate. Many others besides those too, but I'm a little brain-dead at the moment.
