  • Really smart people may not have to study, but if they are realllllly smart they study anyway, because they realize that there is always something more they could learn or understand. They aren't studying to pass a test or to get a scholarship, they are studying to learn.
  • No idea, i don't fit into that category. I always used to have to study hard to get decent grades.
  • It is easier for somebody with a higher IQ to retain information, but they usually do study. Intelligence and education are different. Just because somebody is really smart that doesn't mean they know something before they read it. They have to learn it just like everyone else.
  • Really smart people are people who realize that their brains are like muscles, and that they have to be "exercised" in order to achieve and maintain good performance.
  • I work in an industry that's home to many 'really smart people'. They all study & work very hard. The difference that I have found between them & myself is that they can carry (remember) it all. They learn something new and a year later, even if that knowledge has not been needed or brought up since, they have still retained all of it and can explain it thoroughly.
  • I did not study at all in childhood, just complete focus in the class was more than enough for me to score highest in the class. I had photogenic memory, remembered every word written on the board during the exams. In comparison, my sis had to memorize for hours and still hardly passed the grades. I think it is the capability of your brain to grasp the information, process the information, and then store / retain the information that detemines how smart a person is.
  • Really Smart people study thats why thier smart and even if they know the answers to a certain subject they still study on it!
  • Smart people usually don't study hard... because they don't need to. I think anybody who knows he is good for learning and studying quickly and easily will take profit out of it.
  • I finished my second quarter in college with a 3.48 GPA..yes Im proud...I worked very hard for it. I dont consider myself a "smart" person and I realize that I have to study hard.
  • The way I see it, smart people are people that study hard on things that arouse their interest. I assume your question refers to academics though so I'll say this: I'm a pretty smart guy (138 IQ) who's a senior in college, has a 3.8 GPA and have probably studied a total of 2 hours my entire time at the school. There are people in my class that spend weeks studying for midterms and finals and never do as well as me. Then they get mad at me when I do better than them without really even trying. It's kind of annoying really, I mean what am I supposed to do? anyway, the point I'm getting at is some people can just retain information better than others. I wouldn't particularly say that makes them smarter, though.
  • Smart people generally find learning comes more naturally to them. Studying is another matter. It requires discipline, and some really smart people never learn that discipline. Obsessively investigating something that has caught your attention for a time is NOT the same as knowing how to study. A person who knows how to study, will be able to study even things that bore them to tears.
  • Intelligence is usually a combination of both natural talent and hard work.
  • I think it comes naturally to them if they are learning a subject that appeals to them. They might be smart about certain subjects and not in another area. You have to be interested in the topic being taught in order to be smart about it.
  • I don't know about the REALLY smart people, but most of the fairly smart (IQ 120-160) people I know just absorb information naturally or with casual study. Studying hard is only for those things that must be learned in-depth quickly, like cramming for the final exam in HTFF (Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow), but generally doesn't work as the knowledge is like rain. Hit it hard for a brief period of time and the surface will get very wet but as soon as the rain stops the little droplets slide off as if they were never there. A prolonged exposure of less intensity will saturate and soak in. Personally, I learned more in a week of everyday life than I did in a month of studying 90 hours a week. Then again, part of it depends on a person's aptitudes. I can study languages all I want and they won't stick :(
  • Well some of being smart depends a lot on the parents and how they raise the person like if they raise him/her that school is important and to study then they will probably be smart. Yes studying can help you get a lot smarter!
  • Both. And probably a bit of a self perpetuating cycle. When you study hard in first grade, you're a good reader by grade two, so while the others are struggling to read the material, you breeze through and understand it better, 'cause you're past sounding out the words, so you move on to harder words and everyone says what a smart kid you are and that encourages you to read more and learn more...But probably you were pretty bright to want to study hard in first grade to begin with. I saw some pretty unbright people get through college, by studying hard, and I saw some bright people not make it 'cause they couldn't be bothered to study. So a lot depends on your definition of smart.
  • Some people can study a little and ace the test, and others have to study harder to ace the test. Some people retain information better than others.
  • Everyone has to study. Study hard? At some point, yes. Smart or not, study and review are the only way to an ace, regardless of the subject or exam (if we are talking upper level courses). In basket weaving, its about dexterity, and matters not how smart one is or isn't.
  • Both. Really smart people do not have to study hard as subjects may come naturally. However, many smart people may coast through school for awhile, but eventually do have to apply themselves - for instance, once they get to college. They are the ones more likely to have that opportunity and more likely to succeed in those opportunities, usually (not always, nothing is absolute in life).
  • I know a lot of very smart people - and some do have to study hard and for others it does just come naturally. If we take the incredibly smart - the Einsteins etc. then they have the ability to think outside the box, outside of what they have been otld and have studied. They have incredible imagination. So you cna say some of it comes naturally to them, but then they have to work incredibly hard to get the proofs etc. I have a high IQ (above 140) and I dont have to study hard. However, high IQ does not mean incredibly smart (Im above average at quizzes but nothing special - I am not confident in the kitchen etc. so have to concentrate much harder than most for some simple tasks. The really really smart people have it naturally and can study.
  • Its a myth that bright people do not have to study hard. On general education subects they may not need to put a whole lot of effort into study. However, the complexity of advanced material would drive them to study just as hard if not more so than others. If you don't believe me try coming up with a new theory on your own or develop a new process or vaccine.
  • It depends on the individual. Some people can make really good grades in school without really trying or studying, but others have to work hard to get good grades.
  • I think really smart people have excercised their brain more and just enjoy using it more. Some people love to think and challenge their brain, helping it grow and learn new things.
  • Really smart people can get by with less study, but they are so curious that they love to learn and will keep learning for a lifetime.
  • It is also a matter of using the right techniques to study. As they say, you should learn how to learn before starting to learn. Spending 12 hrs at a stretch will be less rewarding than say 2 hr sessions with breaks in between.
  • id think i bit of both
  • It depends on the subject, I know some very smart students, that can ace a math test with no studying, and fail a science class.
  • It is always really smart to study hard! Natural talent can affect all kinds of different ways of being "smart," but studying or practicing always improves your performance. Anyone who studies is smarter and wiser than someone who blows it off, no matter how their final grades compare. It is certainly is easier for some people to do well in school. The ability to concentrate, to read for long periods, and to remember what you have read are important abilities that can be affected by your genetic background and your health (for instance, if you have Attention Deficit Disorder, some school skills are going to be hard for you. If your eyesight makes it hard to read or see the board, that's going to be a problem too, especially if no one realizes you have vision problems). There are all different kinds of being "smart." Someone who doesn't do well in English may be great at Math, and vice versa. Some people who don't do well on tests may be great on projects where they get to build something (like Science Fair projects, or building things in Shop, or Sewing). And some people have terrific athletic skills, which are improved by practicing -- their kind of studying. Your question is harder than it looks at first.
  • I've been a topper all my life, I never study I mean I get it when the teacher's teach in the classroom, I read the book once, I remember it forever.
  • My eldest son is really smart and thought he didn't have to study. For years he got away with it but suddenly, when it really counted he failed and failed badly. He lost complete confidence in himself and bummed around for a year or so. He's back on track now but it was a real struggle. My second son is smart enough to know he needs to work to achieve. I think that is smart enough.
  • Really smart people do not study hard. They THINK HARD like me. Don't understand my answer? Then maybe you are not really smart like me. Bet I will get a lot of negatives for this answer. :)
  • I always thought that naturally smart people never really had to study much but whatever the reason is smart people are sure lucky cause even when I do study I hardly get a decent enough grade. I am not academically smart so I think I wanna try acting or a sport as my careers haha(:
  • Smart people may be able to get by with little studying, but they do need to listen in class, read the material and practice (if that's part of learning). They may need to do lots less but they still need to do it. Some people have called me smart. I floated through high school. Never took a book home. I finally learned how to study in college but not until I was almost done. College average: I graduated, Grad School: 3.93 GPA and I studied very hard!
  • i think that smartness is something everyone can achive. the only difference between everyone is how or which techniques make u learn or get thinks faster. smartness also depends on how u manage stress and the kind of life u have, the food u eat, and how u manage to keep self healthy. because brain can cause to form new neurons when u study new things so if u take things interesting it would appeal to u and ur brain. smartness also effects ur eyees. ur eyes contribute to ur brain performance.thus, there is no differnece between anyone. there are also different smartness. one person might be book smart like in studies and others smart in matureness and other antescedonts of life, so i think it is good to be smart in all factors of life and thats the people who i tink shoould be called smart.
  • I'd like to think I'm really smart, and I rarely study. Mostly its all memorization.
  • In school, studying is a waste of time. Usually, the extremely smart could have taken or taught AP courses or low level college courses better than done by most teachers in their 6th or 7th grade or maybe earlier. Early stages of knowledge are common sense. As my AP calc teacher once said that there is no need to make Calculus easy, because it already is. This is from my personal experience and some of my friend's. Smart people know other smart people. This does not mean that we don't try to learn. It just means that we learn far more advanced material far quicker. I also believe that almost everyone has the potential to be really smart, but it just needs to be unlocked. If you need help with this, you can give me a e-mail at geniusnonaopser@gmail.com. It will also help me strengthen my hypothesis.
  • If you find people who are considered smart and they are NOT working/studying hard, it is because they are "coasting" in a second-rate school, and that's not a very smart thing to do. In the better colleges, virtually 100% of the very smart people you will find working and studying hard.
  • I think a smart people would study hard anyway. It would be dumb not to.
