  • The former. At least that's what I mean. :o)
  • I think the cadres of the PC Police have been working hard over the last several years to down-grade Christianity in our greetings and many other elements of society in our country. Personally, I think too many of us have been a little too submissive and let them have their way. But like so many thing, give the ill-begotten an inch...sure enough, they want the mile! I greet people during these holidays as I perceive their personal beliefs. If I know they are Christian, I say "Merry Christmas"...if, say, I know them to be Jewish, I wish them "Happy Hanukkah". At times I may shoot craps and wish them "Merry Christmas" in error, not intending to offend. I know that I, as Christian, would not be offended if a Jew were to wish me a "Happy Hanukkah" and would say "Thank you...and same to you". I think it absurd that the PC AH's get their knickers in a twist over good will...any good will. But that's me.
  • This time of year has more celebrations than just Christmas and i say Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. I do my best to respect everyone all of the time.
  • I think it is just being respectful. I say both and either, but try to be sensitive to whoever I am addressing.
  • Since you never know what someones beliefs are unless you ask them... Saying Happy Holidays for me, is respecting everyone all at the same time.
  • I honestly take it as a catch-all for Christmas, New Year's Day, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. It's not so much considerate as it is frugal in its use of syllables, which I find respectful and respectable.
  • political correctness has taken the fun out of everything! I usually say Merry Christmas unless I know that they don't celebrate it. However, I'm not offended in the least if someone says happy holidays to me. It is easier to write on cards Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
  • When you turn on the Television you can clearly see that this set of "holidays" is strictly about the economy. If you actually believe there is a shred of anything religious in what is going on now, you are only kidding yourself. Santa rules!
  • A bit of both. We rarely use that expression in the UK, we just say happy christmas to everyone.
  • I usually say Merry Christmas to those I know celebrate Christmas and Happy Holidays to my Jewish friends because I have trouble spelling the correct name of the holiday. I think most people are trying to cover everyone .
  • I think they are watering down the purpose of Christmas, which is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. People, some 87% of Americans identify themselves as Christians, let us have our holiday back. If a person comes up to me and says Happy Chaunukah, I do not take offense, because they are wishing me happiness and good fortune in accordance with their religious conviction. Why can you not see that that is all people are doing when they wish you a Merry Christmas? If some secularists didn't spend so much time trying to wipe out Christianity in our nation, they wouldn't be so bitter and nasty to the world, and some Christians wouldn't be so bitter and nasty towards them. May you all have a Merry Christmas, and may we find peace on our Earth some day soon.
  • I think they are trying to be inclusive since we have so many holidays during December! Season of Warmth http://hubpages.com/hub/Season-of-Warmth Happy Holidays! :) Suzanne
