  • Cloacina ("cloaca" in latin means "sewer" or "drain") was the goddess who presided over the Cloaca Maxima, the system of sewers in Rome. She was the goddess of purification, I guess.
  • 'The Shrine of Venus Cloacina was a small sanctuary on the Roman Forum, in front of the Basilica Aemilia. The shrine was dedicated to Venus as the deity of Cloaca Maxima, the main sewer of ancient Rome. Venus was identified with the goddess of Cloacina who had Etruscan origins. The shrine was also the entrance of the sewage system.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrine_of_Venus_Cloacina Much as it would seem absurd in today's context the sewers too had a presiding goddes in the past. But when we consider the fact that it is the sewers that keep our cities clean the idea of worshiping a goddes exclusively presiding over the sewers would not appear all that absurd. Also associating the Sewer goddess with Venus - the presiding diety of all that is beautiful - too appears logical. Cloacina must be the only Sewer Goddess in the world.
