As a general rule you aren't supposed to clean coins. There really isn't a way to clean coins and preserve the value cos cleaning them wears away the designs.

I got several answers relating coin cleaning and always the answer was, to never clean them. That's what a collectioner looks for. The old rusty coins are worth more, because of their condition and date. If you really want to do it, try dipping them in vinegar over night.

boil them in water with some crumpled up balls of aluminium foil

Either don't do it or use a little toothpaste and gently rub under water to remove as much as you want.

To preserve a coins value, you dont want to clean it at all. It is quite apparent to a coin dealer when a coin has been cleaned, and that makes the value go down.
