  • A shotgun slug should be fired through a cylinder or improved cylinder choke. With some shotguns even a modified choke setting is safe for firing slugs, but I would check with your local gun shop before trying. You may also want to make sure that you are using the correct slug type for the barrel you have. You should fire "rifled" slugs from a smooth barrel shotgun. The "rifled" slug, used in smooth-bore shotguns has rifling or ribs on the slug. These ribs are designed to prevent damage to the gun if fired through a barrel with some choke.
