  • This is really a sugared drink tax. I say why not...and I do drink sodas.
  • Disagree. A coke does not make you fat. 20 do. Drinking them all day every day do. A Big Mac does not make you fat. Eating them daily instead of as a treat makes you fat. It's bad enough that the government has banned certain foods because they are 'bad' for you, but let's not have the government use the tax code to control society more than it already does. Let's flip the discussion. Let's make fruits and veggies tax free. Let's make water tax free. Let's give tax breaks for Souper Salad restaurants. (And Sweet Tomatoes restaurants as well.)
  • I say neigh! fat people have feelings too!
  • I don't drink soda, but I don't like the tax idea, why stop at sugared drinks why not tax McDonald's and Cheetos, candy and plus size clothing? Or better yet throw parents in jail for letting their children drink sugared drinks. I don't think a tax will stop any one from buying soda It didn't stop most people I know from smoking, the health risks did.
  • no. besides, we would get a lot more money if we taxed people for being assholes
  • Disagree..!!
  • Disagree. Some people can't help their obese and some can't so that's unfair.
  • Do you intend to tax fat people or something else? If you are taxing food then it is just another food tax. Why not directly tax the fatties and let the rest of us drink soft drinks if we want? I will tell you why. You aren't really trying to tax obesity at all. You are trying to tax soda drinkers which very well might be of a healthy weight.
  • Disagree. But I'd love to see a carbon tax based on the vehicle that each of us drive. yeah.
  • Sure..if an only if others are likewise taxed..for example alcolholic tax drug addict tax unkind person tax liar tax abuser tax embezzler tax cheater tax selfish tax :) ((hugs))
  • Can't have that. Can you imagine if all those people decide to reduce their tax liabilities and claim refunds? All the fast food joints and other such outlets will go out of business! The gyms will do roaring business and the tax consultants can have tie ups with the Gyms also!LOL!!
  • Disagree. The tax is not being put forward for peoples health any more than the cigarette taxes were. They are just the taxes that will have the least resistance to get passed. Here is an interesting article: http://www.acton.org/commentary/commentary_196.php Governments often find large public support for sin taxes because the majority of the populace does not engage in whatever activity is being taxed: they themselves aren’t affected by the tax, so why should they care?
  • For many people obesity is an inherited condition. Some might call it a "disease" although others just accept themselves as obese and that's just the way they are no "disease" about it. In any case ... a tax is not appropriate any more than you would tax people with diabetes.
  • Sounds... how would it be imposed? Not even doctors agree on a precise chart. Sound.... stupid.
  • Fact from fiction, truth from diction. I say there should be. Every 2 years you should have to submit your weight, for every pound over the highest weight for that person's sex, age, and height bracket they pay $20. If they lose the pounds and get back in line what the medical bracket say they should they can get some of that rebated back. Maybe money will get them to put down the burgers and pick up some weights.
  • No, but I do think you should pay a higher premium on health insurance if you're obese.
  • I think whoever came up or is trying to come up with an "OBESITY" Tax is a Moron ... I am not in favor of such a stupid idea ...
  • I think insurance premiums should be scaled according to one's weight, so really obese people pay more for health insurance, which is fair since they incur greater expenses as a result of their obesity.
  • Disagree, for the same reason I disagree with "free" healthcare.
  • Absolutely not. People have gone nuts -- wanting everything taxed that they are not part of.
  • Disagree! The idea of obesity tax appears to be to increase the price of some high fat or high sugar foods. But... what about the slim people who occasionally eat these high fat or high sugar foods - within a reasonable and sensible balanced diet? Why should they pay more purely because some fat people cannot display self control in their eating habits? I would be very cross if the price I pay for the fish and chips I eat approx once a year was increased because fat people can't stop themselves from eating it every day! There must be other ways to stop the obese from overeating!!!
  • Whatever its so fucked up in America everybody has a vice or two and now those vices subject to tax. Eating drinking, smoking, bein fat fuck it. Tax it all. breathing, sleeping, pissing, shitting, farting, fucking.
